Gerald "Jerry" Murphy — the Pessimist Brother

Side Character

Gerald Murphy“Jerry” to everyone — is the family pessimist. Nate’s older cousin. The surname fits: this is the family that lent its name to Murphy’s Law (whatever can go wrong, will), and Jerry lives by it like scripture. Where the Uncle has his self-belief, and Robert carries the gospel of mindset, Jerry carries the dread: he is certain Chess City is no promised land but a nest of evil chess pieces — pieces with mouths and eyes, watching from behind the gates. Everyone calls him paranoid. In his game, he’s right.

Traits

  • His worry is a real radar: it catches threats other people walk straight into — the loose plank, the ambush, the trap that smiles.
  • The same worry is a blind spot; his head down bracing for the hit
  • Speaks in warnings and worst-cases; his catchphrase is a grim little “…called it!”
  • Plays as an f-pawn

Background

Jerry grew up on the same Checker Town streets as his cousins, but, unlike his more gregarious family members, he is one of the wary. He didn’t choose fear; fear chose him and chose him early, and it has, on occasion, been correct — which is exactly what makes it so hard to put down.

Role in the Story

Jerry represents that inner sense of dread one gets in certain situations — the shadow side of the optimism the rest of the journey runs on. His comedy and his heart come from the same gag: his worst fears are vindicated on-screen (the pieces really are grinning at him) while the world around him stays stubbornly warm. He’s the playable lead of Murphy’s Law, the Mega-Man-style scroller whose tagline says it all — “The pessimist was right.” His arc is the slow, tender argument that being right about the danger is not the same as being right about the world.

“Don’t get comfortable. Comfortable is how they get you.”
