The Sand Mines

Hard labor at the far end of a bad road. The Sand Mines are one of the few employment options available to Checker Town citizens – and one of the hardest to escape.

Notable Features

• Workforce is made up almost entirely of prisoners and Checker Town residents
• Run by corporate interests who maintain tight control over workers
• Located too far from Checker Town for Nate to stay close to Princess – a significant factor in his calculus

Role in the Story

The Sand Mines represent one of the worst-case outcomes for someone from Checker Town. Nate may end up here. Whether he does – and whether he can leave – is part of what drives the story forward.
