The Sand Mines

Hard labor at the far end of a bad road. The Sand Mines are one of the few employment options available to Checker Town citizens – and one of the hardest to escape.

Notable Features

• Workforce is made up almost entirely of Checker Town residents
• Run by corporate interests who maintain tight control over workers
• Workers are either physically constrained or find themselves unable to leave for other reasons
• Located too far from Checker Town for the narrator to stay close to Princess – a significant factor in his calculus

Mysteries

There are rumors of a portal – called the pu-ri-n-se-suuuu portal – that may connect the Sand Mines to somewhere else entirely. What lies on the other side is unknown.

Role in the Story

The Sand Mines represent one of the worst-case outcomes for someone from Checker Town. The narrator may end up here. Whether he does – and whether he can leave – is part of what drives the story forward.
