• The job sits at an uncomfortable intersection: it is inside the city he wants to belong to, but accessed only as a worker
• The options facing the narrator are narrow: Chess City Elementary, college (which feels like a dead end), or the Sand Mines (which are too far from Princess)

Role in the Story

Chess City Elementary is where the narrator’s journey and his teaching life begin to converge. It is a place of contradiction – close to the dream, but still at arm’s length.
