The Rival

Introduced as an antagonist, the Rival turns out to be one of the most important allies in the story – someone who understands the pull of Chess City better than almost anyone.

Traits

• Same age as the narrator
• Intensely driven by chess – it is his only road back to his family
• Tough exterior that softens once common ground is found
• A skilled teacher; introduces Princess to the Pirc Defense

Background

He lives in Checker Town, but his entire family is in Chess City. That separation is the engine behind everything he does. Every game he plays, every lesson he gives, is a step closer to being reunited with the people he loves. He and the narrator start as rivals but find that they want the same things.

Role in the Story

When the narrator is sent away, the Rival steps up – taking in Princess and continuing her chess education. His arc moves from adversary to unlikely cornerstone of the group.
