Background

Growing up together in Checker Town, Maxwell and Nate were inseparable. But where Nate looks outward toward Chess City, Maxwell looks inward – comfortable with what is, skeptical of what could be.

Role in the Story

Maxwell represents the pull of staying put – the voice that says the dream isn’t worth chasing. His presence gives Nate’s journey its emotional stakes: leaving town means leaving him behind, too.
